UFOs of the Soviet Era is a book by Mircea Drăghescu exploring the little-known history of unexplained aerial phenomena in the Soviet Union and the countries within its sphere of influence.
The investigation begins with the Russian Revolution of 1917 and the formative years of the Soviet regime. Russian Cosmism was already looking beyond Earth, imagining humanity’s future in space and questioning the existence of other civilizations. Then came aviation, the first rockets, the Second World War, and ultimately the Cold War.
In a world divided between two rival superpowers, anything unidentified in the sky became a potential threat. An unknown object might be an enemy aircraft, a secret weapon, a misidentification, or something far more difficult to explain.
The Soviet Union had its own unexplained encounters. Pilots, military personnel, scientists and civilian witnesses reported phenomena that sometimes triggered investigations and found their way into classified archives. As the story unfolds, another trail begins to emerge: the Z-Files, Soviet records devoted to UFOs and aerial phenomena whose origins could not be established.
From Moscow to the remote expanses of Siberia and Central Asia, the book examines eyewitness accounts, historical events, military programs and documents whose authenticity is sometimes as intriguing as their contents, placing each within the political, scientific and strategic realities of its time.
While the West was creating its own history of UFOs, the Soviet Union was watching the same skies, with different methods, different concerns and, above all, a deeply ingrained culture of secrecy.
UFOs of the Soviet Era tells the story from the other side of the divide and opens some of the strangest archives in Soviet UFO history: the Z-Files.
